Phthalates have been widely used—and are still used in some parts of the world—in cable insulation and as plasticizers in some PVC products. Despite EU restrictions, they can still be found within the Community.

A recent inspection by Swedish authorities [1] revealed harmful phthalates in a number of electronic devices, primarily low-cost products.

It is important to emphasize that responsibility always lies with the importer. Therefore, when importing electronic devices from outside the EU, it is advisable to consult an expert in chemical legislation.

Phthalates are synthetic organic compounds, many of which are endocrine disruptors and toxic to reproduction.

The most harmful among them are diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), and benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP).

The use of these substances in electrical and electronic equipment is restricted under the RoHS Directive, and they are also subject to authorization under the EU-wide REACH Regulation.
